On your own this December 31st? Here's how to get a mate to help you ring in the coming year.

Even if you’ve got plans for New Year’s, sometimes the thought of spending a night dateless can leave you feeling sad and hopeless. This is especially true if you’re at a celebration that is heaping with happy couples. Instead of letting it get you down, here are some tips for finding a casual date so you don’t have to go it alone.

Put Up an Online Profile

Internet ads are easy to place and can net you immediate interest, if your know how to do it. Remember that you’re looking for potential dates, not the love of your life. Keep your search criteria as open as possible to include the maximum number of responses.

Tweak an Existing Internet Ad

If you’ve already got a profile up, change your headline, essay, and picture to help you generate more feedback. If necessary, hire a professional to rewrite your entire ad and make it the best it can be.

Ask Friends to Set You Up

Let your pals know you’re interested in having a date for New Year’s. Be clear, however, that you’re not looking for your future spouse, rather, you just want to be with someone that could be fun to hang out with for a night. This laid back approach will ease any worries of finding you just the right person, and instead open up their ideas to people they normally wouldn’t have considered for you.

Call Up Your Single Friends

We’re not talking “friends with benefits” here, but rather a date only. Every single person has a friend that they’ve flirted with, talked to, and for whatever reason kept around. Call up your single friend and ask him or her if they’d consider accompanying you to a New Year’s celebration. Remind your friend that it’s just a casual date, and not romance, you’re looking for.

Fire Up Your Facebook

Online networking sites are great for meeting new friends and business contacts, so why not find a New Year’s date that way, too? Use your marketing skills for more than just chatting. Instead, find a few folks you have a lot in common with in your area, and ask casually what their New Year’s plans are. If someone says they have nothing in the works, suggest a coffee date or short meeting to better get to know the person.

Attend a Singles Only New Year’s Eve Party

Parties geared specifically toward singles have never been more popular. Event planners recognize that sometimes singles get shuffled to the side when it comes to major holidays. Search your local paper for singles parties in your area. Many New Year’s Eve parties are also combined with speed dating events earlier in the evening. Get to know a few folks through your eight-minute question and answer time, and then have a drink with them later to ring in the New Year. The perfect combination!
