Cthulhu is a popular figure among geeks and science fiction fans. The name comes from H.P. Lovecraft's The Call of Cthulhu. According to Cthulhu.org, the beast has a "pulpy, tentacled head surmounted on a grotesque and scaly body with rudimentary wings." The Cthulhu Fireworm is a take-off on this creature. Its flat body makes it the perfect ending to a scarf. Here's how to make it.
Materials
- 12 ounces worsted weight cotton yarn in bright orange or red color
- size H-8 crochet hook
- yarn needle
- pair of Darice animal eyes (12 mm) with washer solid backing in black
Directions for Cthulhu Scarf (Body of Fireworm)

- Row 2: Double crochet in second chain from hook and in each stitch across (17 total). Chain 3 (which counts as one double crochet for next round), and turn.

Assembly of Cthulhu Fireworm Scarf
Place the two craft eyes through one of the rounds to make it look like a face. Attach the other round to the back to make the head. (The back of the craft eyes will be covered.) Place the bottom of the scarf (about two inches worth of length) between the two rounds.
Using yarn and a yarn needle, sew the rounds together, making sure to include the bottom of the scarf in. Make sure that the eyes are properly placed so that they are horizontal to the bottom of the scarf. You will not be able to adjust the eyes once this step is complete, so make sure they are positioned where you'd like them.
Curly Tentacles
When the rounds are sewn together, attach your crochet hook into the center bottom point of the round, and pull through a stitch with the yarn. This is where you will begin to make the first of the three curly tentacles.
- Row 1: Attach yarn and chain 16. Turn.
- Row 2: In second chain from hook, work two double crochet. Work two double crochet in each stitch across, ending at the top of the curly tail. Slip stitch to connect the end to the worm round. Finish off.
Make two additional curly tentacles on each side of the one you just made.
