An ounce of decorum goes a long way when it comes to dating. Here are five points you should know before you meet someone new.

First dates are a chance to show your very best self. The first thing to do is make sure you're on time. A few minutes late is okay. Several minutes late is not. Plan ahead so you know the best route to take to get to your location. Allow enough time for delays such as traffic and construction detours. Everyone's time is precious, so show your date you respect their schedule. Don’t make your date wait for you.

Be Polite on Your First Date

Even if the date isn't going as you'd hoped, there is no excuse for rude behavior. When you’re seated in front of someone, listen to them, engage in conversation, and act as if you’re happy to be there with them. After all, they took the time to meet you, the least you can do is promote the golden rule: treat your date as you'd like to be treated.

Along those same lines, be thoughtful. This is different than merely being polite. Thoughtfulness includes not hurting someone's feelings unnecessarily, or making fun of them in a nasty way. Until you get to know them, don’t crack a joke about them that could be construed as criticism. (Everyone’s sense of humor is different, and they may think you’re making fun of them, rather than just making fun.) If you do need to tell them you’re not interested, do it in the kindest way possible.

How to End a First Date

When you don’t want to see someone again, you may think it’s better to just lie and tell them you’ll call them. But that’s just leading them on. The best bet is to be honest while also being thoughtful. (See point #3.) Don't tell someone you're going to call them when you're not. Don't tell them you had a great time when you didn't. Don't tell them you'd like to see them again if you don't. Be straightforward and respectful – your date will appreciate it.

Life is all about change so if your plans suddenly get mixed up, roll with it easily. If you'd planned to attend a loud concert and suddenly your date has a headache, smile and don't make them feel bad. If you really love hanging out at a certain bar but your date just wants to grab a cup of coffee somewhere, be flexible enough to try a different venue. After all, your goal is not to do everything your way, but to spend quality time getting to know your date. The only way you can really get the most out of a new relationship is if you’re willing to step outside your comfort zone.
